Designers in Dialogue Marion Stora

For our fourth episode of “Designer’s Word,” we’re honored to introduce our conversation with the gifted French designer and architect Marion Stora, who recently teamed up with our workrooms to bring to life her new collection “Opening Acts”, unveiled at Maison&Objet. Beyond her expertise in design and interior architecture, Marion shares her sources of inspiration, her enthusiasm for artisanal crafts, and her immersive journey in the world of creation. Let’s explore the backstory of her career, her distinctive approach, and the enthralling aspects of her partnership with our craftsmen.

Hello Marion. How are you doing today?

"Hello Hugo, I'm doing quite well today. It's been a bustling time following our recent 'Opening Acts' exhibit at Maison&Objet, which has brought a lot of positive momentum to our agency."

Could we start off this interview by briefly touching on your background?

"I embarked on architecture studies at Paris-Belleville with the aim of becoming an architect. However, I quickly discovered my true passion lay in interior design. This led me to continue my education at Penninghen, where I graduated in 2006. Sailing has been a lifelong passion of mine, so it felt natural to start my career in London, working for renowned yacht interior design firms. Those four years in London were incredibly enriching. Following that, I returned to Paris to collaborate with Rémi Tessier on two iconic yacht projects. The unique technical challenges of yacht interior design, engaging with discerning clients, and working with dedicated artisans significantly shaped my career trajectory. In 2011, I founded my own firm, initially operating between Paris and London. Today, supported by my husband Didier in the growth of our agency, we have a talented team of 5, including architects, interior designers, and graphic artists."

What inspires you daily ?

"I find inspiration in all art forms: the harmony of shapes, materials, colors, and the way art resonates with its era, whether it's through painting, sculpture, literature, or cinema. Inspiration is everywhere. Beyond the arts, it's about maintaining an open mind, delving deep into subjects, being curious about the world and people around you—then, inspiration flows naturally. Additionally, my consistent yoga practice over the past two decades has been crucial. It grounds me, providing balance, alignment, and a capacity to appreciate beauty, which I then translate into my work."

What excites you about collaborating with artisans, especially with our workrooms?

"It's the synergy between my profession and the craftsmen's artistry. We are inseparable and enrich each other's work. We have a deep loyalty to the artisans we partner with, yet we're always on the lookout for new talents and expertise."

"At Ateliers Jouffre, I've met individuals who are passionate, meticulous, and dedicated to preserving and sharing their craft. They possess the talent and enthusiasm for creating one-of-a-kind pieces. This, to me, represents the 'inner beauty' of the furniture I design, brought to life by the timeless skills of these artisans."

Could you introduce your debut furniture collection?

"My “Opening Act” collection consists of sixteen distinctive pieces, characterized by their structural integrity, clean lines, and precision, yet they're also warm, vibrant, and full of life. I aimed for simplicity, softness, and harmony in my designs, celebrating natural materials like handwoven textiles, leathers, and raw wood."

"The 'Soulful' chair, crafted in your workshops, perfectly captures the essence of my collection with its inviting lines and sculpted wooden arms that flow into animal-leg feet. It's a piece that offers comfort and a sense of being embraced, a culmination of nearly eight months of collaboration between your team and mine. The outcome is truly exceptional, and working with you is always a delight. Trust is established from the get-go, which is invaluable."

Can you share the concept behind the scenography for your “Opening Acts” event at Maison & Objet In The City?

"We showcased the dual nature of the collection. The first area was enveloped in linen from Dedar Milano, artfully draped by your team across the walls and ceiling, accented with trimmings from Verrier that echoed the soft curves of the displayed pieces, creating a serene and luminous atmosphere".

"The second area was designed to highlight the raw beauty of solid oak furniture, inspired by the brutalist style, with pops of color adding sophistication. Our “Abysses” rug, woven by Robert Four, mirrored against a reflective ceiling, was set off by Argile's astral hues and a plum Alpaca velvet curtain from Dedar, tailored by your team."

"Maison HENRI skillfully illuminated both spaces. This collaboration underscored the essential synergy of our crafts, bringing the initial vision of “Opening Acts” to life beautifully."

Marion’s inspiration flourishes beyond design, embracing art, her curiosity for artisanal crafts, her regular practice of yoga, and her love for nature. Her collaboration with our workrooms reflects a fascination with the synergy with craftsmen, showcased in the “Opening Act” collection. We extend our thanks to Marion for her kindness and this insightful conversation, highlighting her commitment to creating works filled with beauty and emotion.
